Painting is a rewarding hobby and a relaxing way to pass the time. Start with acrylics, which are water-based, as opposed to oil-based paints. Acrylics are easy to work with and clean-up is less of a challenge. You will find many different brands and choices of acrylic paint in your local arts and craft stores or online. There are different grades of acrylic paints, ranging from beginner to professional, all of high quality. Start with beginner paints, which are less expensive, and you may graduate to higher quality pigments. Purchase a few brushes in different sizes and shapes, a wooden or plastic palette or a paper palette pad, some cheap canvases consisting of different sizes, but start with the smaller size canvases until you gain more expertise. You can take a class online or in your local arts and craft store, or you can watch a selection of hundreds of YouTube videos for free, which will help you learn painting techniques and gain confidence. A fun place to start it is with a Bob Ross video. He was the master of landscape painting and his videos teach you everything you need to know about painting trees, clouds, mountains and water. After you get the hang of it you can start developing your own style. A fun technique to try is what they call paint pouring. You will also hear the terms Dutch pour or dirty pour. This is a method in which you pour different colors of paint onto the canvas and manipulate the movement of the paint on the canvas, creating exciting patterns and designs. It’s like the paint has a mind of its own. The method is good for beginners because it helps you develop your imagination and your freedom of expression, as well as your confidence. Using a combination of artistic techniques and more abstract methods, you will eventually develop your own style and have an enjoyable hobby, or perhaps a budding career.
